Have you caught the marathon virus and do you want to run in one of the "big 6"? Then start with the London Marathon. With nearly 40,000 participants and hundreds of thousands of spectators, the London Marathon is one of the largest events in its kind. A true sporting event that is almost as much fun for those who encourage someone as for the participants themselves.
The marathon starts in Blackheath, in the east of London. Depending on which group you are in, there are different departure points. The closest stations are Blackheath (blue group), Maze Hill (green group) or Greenwich (red group).
The best place to encourage Nasser Nadjmi?
Avoid the start, the center of Greenwich and Tower Bridge and find a quieter place along the route. The Shadwell DLR stop, accessible by the Docklands Light Railway and Overground trains, is a good base for the section around The Highway, about half way through the race. Or get off at Limehouse and set up along Commercial Road, where there is a festive vibe on marathon day.
In Canary Wharf / Isle of Dogs it usually stays relatively quiet. Westferry Road is a handy place. The marathon passes by twice, so you have a double chance of spotting Nasser Nadjmi. Another tip is Bermondsey (miles 11-12), where it remains relatively calm and has no crush barriers.
If you want to be a little more in the center along the line, choose the piece at the end of the race around Victoria Embankment (miles 24-25). The runners then walk further apart so that you can see them better. It is always very busy.
